Fast Facts

We are part of the world's largest service club organization. We are part of Lions Club international which with 1.35 million members and more than more than 46,000 clubs worldwide is the largest service organization in the world

We have a dynamic history: Lions Club of Thiruvanmiyur was founded 42 years ago as an offshoort of Lions Club of Guindy. The club then had twenty members. Chartered on 3.2.1970, The Club was inaugurated on 4.2.1970 by the then International President Ln.W.R.Bryan. Ln.K.R.Sundararajan was the then District Governor. Today it has members. In its early years the prominent activities the Club engaged in were: health and education promotion for the poor.

We serve the poor: Since the second year of its birth the Club has been running a Medical Centre which has been serving the health needs of the local poor community. It is now housed in a permanent premises at South Mada Street, Thiruvanmiyur, which till today stands humble but tall in its lofty goals. An attendant physician and a nurse take care of the Centre, Monday to Saturday, for two hours each day, offering free consultation as well as free vitamins and common medication. A dentist offers free consultation twice a week. Today the premises also houses RASA, an organization for the specially challenged children.

We give sight and good health: In addition the Club organizes free health camps on general health, or specialized ones like eye, dental care, ultrasound screening for women, diabetes screening, cancer screening etc. It also organizes at least two blood donation camps every year.

We give knowledge: The Club has adopted two schools on which it focuses its education
promotion activities. Talent is encouraged, scholarships and cash awards are given for academic excellence and medical camps are conducted for specialized screening. Some of the needs of the schools are taken care of. For example., computers are given or books for the library are donated.

We serve youth: The Club has always believed in developing the youth as socially conscious citizens of the country. What better way this can be achieved than to start a youth wing of the Lions movement in the form of Leo Club. Leo Club of AMET is two years old and has made spectacular contribution by organising massive blood donation camps.

We serve society: Visit to old age homes to participate in “Dine with Divine” programmes, tree plantation, donations to the disabled are among the other activities of the Club.

We have multiplied: The Club has contributed to the spread the message of Lionism by helping create more clubs. The club sponsored many new clubs in the forty years of its existence of which Lions Club of GKD Millennium and Lions Club of Darshan continue to function.

We partner with like minded people: The Club believes that more can be accomplished through partnership. It is one among very few clubs which have a twinning arrangement with a club of another country. Lions Club of Kulim, Malaysia is its sister club. The two clubs meet once a year, alternating between Chennai and Kulim for its venue. Joint participation in projects is the main focus during these meets. Besides, the club has visited other Indian cities for carrying out projects jointly with another club.

We stay in touch: To enable the Club to communicate with its own members as well as with other clubs of the Lions district, a bulletin entitled Amongst Us is periodically published. The contents comprise news in and around the district, international Lions news, club achievements, members news and matter for general reading.
